Apply for NSFAS:Students at TVET colleges study in three trimesters, as opposed to universities, which have two semesters. The funding mechanism varies slightly depending on the course being studied. Do i have to Apply for NSFAS Every Trimester?

NSFAS regulations require TVET college students to apply for funding each trimester. For example, if you plan to enroll in trimester 2 or trimester 3, you should apply for NSFAS for each trimester. Unlike at public universities, where NSFAS covers the entire course, the situation is different for TVET students.

Because TVET college courses differ from university programs, students at these institutions are paid differently. Students who are funded by NSFAS TVET colleges receive additional allowances to cover the costs of housing, tuition, transportation, meals, and personal care.

Students’ needs at TVET colleges change all the time, depending on the institutions and courses offered. For example, the institution provides a list of the items that must be completed each trimester. As a result, students are funded based on what they will require each trimester. Other courses are not available during the other trimesters. As a result, they are required to apply for NSFAS every trimester.

Does NSFAS fund trimester students?

TVET courses are intended to provide students with occupational and vocational skills that will enable them to find work in South Africa. Manufacturing, engineering, construction, agriculture, and other skills are in short supply in the country

This new revolution is being driven by TVET colleges. They provide courses in various fields, and upon completion of their studies, students receive various qualifications such as national certificates or diplomas. Some of these courses, however, have different study periods. As a result, NSFAS funds trimester courses in order to meet the needs of each student.

Students interested in studying in trimester 2 or 3 should apply when NSFAS opens applications. Students typically have one week to apply for NSFAS. The application period will be for people who want to study at any of South Africa’s 55 TVET colleges during a specific trimester.

How Do I Apply for NSFAS Trimester?

You can apply for NASFAS funding online, visit the TVET bursary office, or go to the NSFAS head office or NSFAS application centres. To apply online, follow the steps below:

  • Visit www.nsfas.org.za and click on the tab “myNSFAS” 
  • Create your myNSFAS account.
  • Once you create your account, click on the “APPLY” tab that appears on the screen. Be sure to complete all sections. 
  • Upload the required documents
  • Click on “Submit”

When applying for NSFAS funding, you will need documents, including a copy of the student’s South African ID/birth certificate/temporary ID/. You must also provide copies of the same documents for the parent/guardian or spouse. Remember to check the opening dates for applications for Trimester 3 funding, so you do not miss the deadline. Once you miss the application window, NSFAS will not fund you for that trimester.  

How Much Do Trimester Students Get From NSFAS?

Trimester students get different amounts of allowances from NSFAS due to various factors. For example, the stipends are limited per student to one Pre-Vocational Learning (PLP), National Certificate Vocational (NCV), and R191 course per year.

According to the DHET-NSFAS bursary rules for 2023, the following are allowances allocated to TVET students.  

  • Personal care costs of R2 900 are disbursed annually and paid per month.
  • Transport allowance- R7,350 allocated annually and paid monthly
  • Private residents- R25 200 released per year and paid monthly to landlords who own accredited properties. 
  • Hostel accommodation costs R33 000 per year.
  • NVC, which includes PLP has 10 payments per month R191 Semester, with five monthly payments in the semester R191 trimester. The trimester has three monthly payments. 

The NSFAS allowances received by each trimester student vary depending on different factors. For example, the type of accommodation, distance travelled by the learner to and from their residence, and registration fees charged by the institution determine the allowances allocated to each student. Learners who travel long distances get more transport allowances.

Generally, VAT refunds for claims less than R3,000.00 are loaded onto the VAT Refund Card within 3-4 weeks of the claimant’s departure date. The endorsement of VAT refund claims significantly influences the processing duration. After SARS approves your claim, anticipate a refund timeline of about 3 months. Their approval process typically entails a thorough review of your records and adherence to tax guidelines.

The National Student Financial Aid Scheme, or NSFAS, is an allowance for undergrad South African students. The Department of Higher Education and Training funds this bursary scheme. This scheme is given to financially weak students who want higher education but cannot afford it.

NSFAS will be allotting around R47.6 for the academic year 2023. This money will help cover students’ tuition and registration fees, transport and accommodation fees, and personal care costs. Here is a guide on NSFAS allowances.

Those students with South African citizenship can apply, and their total and complete household income is less than R350000 or living with a disability, and their income is less than R600000

Students will have to return the money to NSFAS. NSFAS only lets you borrow the money if you sign on to the money-returning policy. You must start paying them back after employment or starting your own business.

How to Create myNSFAS Student Portal Account?

If you need this allowance, you will have to apply for it. To apply for an NSFAS allowance, you must have your myNSFAS Account.

NSFAS is the Organization while myNSFAS is the student portal provided by that organization.

If you are finding it hard to make your myNSFAS Account, then you are at the right place because I will be sharing the whole process step by step.

  • First, you will have to open NSFAS official website which is www.nsfas.org.za
  • Next, you must click on ‘myNSFAS,’ which will appear on the top right corner of the page. Now select ‘create an account.’
  • Then, it will ask for your personal details. Please fill them out carefully; they must match your identity document (ID).
  • Then, fill in your contact details. Note that you must fill it in correctly because NSFAS will have to contact you through the information you provide.
  • Then, you will see the terms and conditions. Read them, then accept them by ticking the box. Note that if you do not agree to the terms and conditions, NSFAS will not be able to proceed with your selection.
  • Then, you must create a unique password and confirm it. Do not share your password with anyone to avoid scammers reaching your funds.
  • Finally, click on the ‘create’ tab. Your account creation is done. Make sure to remember your details, and if some changes occur in your information, revisit the link and make all the changes accordingly.

How to Log in to myNSFAS Account?

Once you make your NSFAS account, you will have to log in to it. You can see all the information on your Account and track your application through your Account. Here is how you can log in.

  • First of all, visit my.nsfas.org.za.
  • Next, you will see a myNSFAS tab; click on it.
  • Then, enter your username and password in the given boxes.
  • In the end, click on ‘sign in.’

How to Reset myNSFAS Account Password?

Your NSFAS account is of crucial importance while applying for an NSFAS scholarship. You will need your Account at every step. So, you must keep your login credentials very safe, but if you cannot remember your password, here is how you can reset it.

  • First, visit ‘The NSFAS student portal.’
  • Next, you will see ‘forgot your password? Click here’ tab. Click on it to restore your password.
  • Then, you will have to enter your ID.
  • Then, click on ‘I can’t remember my password.’
  • Then, press the ‘submit’ tab.
  • You will get an OTP pin on your mobile number or email address.
  • Finally, enter that pin in the given box and click ‘create password.’ This time think of something that you can remember.

Many applicants find these a very intimidating form to create, and the titles can be confusing if you are not used to bureaucratic systems. Luckily, you have us to help! Today we have rounded up everything you need to know about these types of forms and how to ensure they are filled in correctly so your application process is as smooth as possible.

What Is a Vulnerable Child, Or Non-SASSA Declaration Form?

While the title of both forms is rather odd to look at, a Vulnerable Child or Non-SASSA Declaration Form is simply a document used to identify and verify the vulnerable status of a student, or someone who is not receiving any form of social grant through the South African Social Security Agency, better known as SASSA. You will typically be asked to provide a Vulnerable Child or Non-SASSA Declaration Form when you are applying for specific financial aid programs, including NSFAS for tertiary education.
