Margaret McNamara Education Grants (MMEG) is a non-profit public organization that was founded in 1981. MMEG encourages and supports women in developing countries by providing educational scholarships, allowing them to shape both their own and their country’s futures.

Margaret McNamara, whose mission was to advance female equality and education, is the group’s leader. Margaret, the wife of the World Bank’s fifth President, used her position to promote these components of development initiatives. Margaret was awarded the Medal of Honor, the highest civilian honor bestowed by the United States, shortly before her death in recognition of her significant accomplishments.

MMEG Bursary 2024

MMEG is inviting female South African students to apply for bursaries for the upcoming academic year of 2024.

The bursary is only available to certain universities.

Females who are citizens of any of the countries listed on the MMEG Country Eligibility List are eligible to apply for the bursary.

The goal of the MMEG grant is to help women from underdeveloped countries further their education and improve the lives of women and children in such countries. MMEG is one of the few organizations that specifically provides financial assistance and scholarships to women.

The scholarship offers the following benefits:

  • Funds for up to US$ 7000 (may vary as it depends on the availability of funds).

Eligibility Criteria For The Bursary

Before applying for the bursary, candidates must ensure that they meet the eligibility requirements. There should be no exceptions or the application will be rejected.

  1. The candidate must hold South African citizenship.
  2. The candidate must have a permit to study in South Africa if the candidate belongs to some other country.
  3. Only female students are eligible to apply.
  4. The candidates must be more than 25 years old or more at the time deadline.
  5. The candidate must be enrolled to study for any of the following:
    • Certificate
    • Undergraduate study
    • Graduate qualification
    • Post-Doctoral-level studies
  6. The candidate must be enrolled in any of the following universities:
    • Cape Peninsula of Technology
    • Central University of Technology
    • Durban University of Technology
    • Mangosuthu University of Technology
    • Fort Hare University
    • Limpopo University
    • Nelson Mandela University
    • North-West University
    • Rhodes University
    • Sefako Makgatho Health Science University
    • Sol Plaatje University, Stellenbosch University
    • Tshwane University
    • University of Cape Town
    • University of Johannesburg
    • University of KwaZulu-Natal
    • University of Mpumalanga
    • University of Pretoria
    • University of the Free State
    • University of the Western Cape
    • University of the Witwatersrand
    • University of Venda
    • University of Zululand
    • Vaal University of Technology
    • Walter Sisulu University
  7. The candidate must be registered for a full-time or part-time program with at least two subjects per term.
  8. The candidate must plan on studying for the whole term after receiving the bursary.
  9. The candidate must be enrolled for one more academic term.
  10. The candidate must not be related to any of the following:
    • International Monetary Fund.
    • World Bank Group.
    • Inter-American Development Bank staff member, retiree, Board Member or spouse.

Documents Required Below

All of the documents listed above must be attached to the application form. There should be no missing documents, or the application will be rejected.

  1. Valid ID documents.
  2. Passport with photo, if you are a foreign student.
  3. Permit or visa page with updated passport, for foreign students.
  4. The second passport with photo, if the student has dual citizenship.
  5. Proof of enrollment at a university.
  6. Academic records and transcripts.
  7. Briefly describe your background and education, as well as how your experiences and aspirations relate to your dedication to assisting women and children in underdeveloped nations.
  8. Briefly describe your thesis, including its purpose, methods, conclusions, and how they connect to your professional objectives (if applicable) (If not applicable: describe how your current academic endeavours relate to your long-term objectives in terms of your career or volunteer work.)
  9. Two reference letters
    • 1 letter of recommendation from a professor at your university and 1 letter from a character reference (this can NOT be a family member)
    • At least one of your referees must have known you for at least two semesters or the equivalent.
    • The referees’ email addresses must be d mentioned in the reference letters so that they can be contacted and sent a link by email from Embark Online to submit their recommendations (you must get the consent of both references before putting forward their details)
    • The candidate will then hear from Embark if they are chosen. (If your referee has not received an email from Embark, advise that they check their spam folder, make sure that pop-up blockers are disabled, and/or send an email to MMEG asking for a specific link.
  10. Note: the documents must be submitted in pdf, jpeg or png format.

The deadline for applications is September 14, 2023. Candidates must submit their applications by the deadline; no late submissions will be accepted.

One Last Chance To Apply To Study At Unisa In 2024

The clock is ticking as the University of South Africa (Unisa) reminds applicants that it’s their last chance to submit applications for the 2024 academic year. Applicants are urged to seize the opportunity to join South Africa’s largest university.

The University of South Africa (Unisa) recently announced the extension for 2024 admission applications has been extended to 17 November 2023.

This extension provides prospective undergraduate students with additional time to prepare and submit their applications. This also provides individuals who missed the opportunity to apply during the official application period.

Individuals still have the opportunity to submit applications for a wide array of academic programmes, including Higher Certificates, Advanced Certificate, Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas, and Degree programs.

Unisa Undergraduate Qualification Applications

The window for applications for admission to undergraduate qualifications for the 2024 academic year opened on 1 September 2023 and closed applications on 13 October 2023. However, the university extended applications which are set to allow more students to join the country’s largest university in 2024.

Prospective students are urged to submit their applications before 17 November 2023 as it remains unclear whether applications will open again for the 2024 academic year. 

Who Must Apply?

Unisa emphasises that all individuals embarking on a new qualification must complete an admission application. This requirement extends to first-time applicants and existing students seeking a change in their qualifications or area of specialisation. 

Individuals who previously applied for admission but were not offered placement or opted not to register after receiving a placement offer must also reapply for admission.

New applicants are permitted to apply for a maximum of two qualifications. Upon a successful application, candidates have the choice to accept or decline Unisa’s offer, with the condition of accepting only one offer.

Students completing a higher certificate or any other programmes and aiming to pursue further undergraduate studies must also apply during this application period.

  • A certified copy of school results
  • A certified copy of any tertiary education academic records
  • A certified copy of an ID document
  • Sworn translations of any documents not in English or Afrikaans

How To Apply To Unisa

  1. Visit the Unisa website.
  2. Select “admissions” in the menu bar at the top of the screen, and “apply for admission” from the drop-down menu.
  3. Choose “undergraduate admissions.”
  4. Click on “Start the process.”
  5. Follow the prompts on the screen.
  6. Fill in all relevant personal details and ensure the upload of all required documents.

As the deadline approaches, prospective students are encouraged to submit their applications before the deadline expires. This is the final opportunity to secure your place at Unisa for the 2024 academic year.
