What is Sassa?1 Best About Social Grants Sassa

Published

on

SASSA stands for the South African Social Security Agency. It is a government agency in South Africa that administers social grants to eligible individuals and families in need. The agency was established in 2005 and falls under the jurisdiction of the Department of Social Development.

SASSA is responsible for the distribution of various social grants, including grants for older persons, people with disabilities, foster care, child support, and the care dependency grant. These grants aim to provide financial assistance to those who are unable to support themselves adequately.

To apply for a social grant through SASSA, individuals need to meet specific eligibility criteria, such as income and means tests. The agency assesses applications and processes payments to approved beneficiaries. SASSA has regional offices across South Africa to provide services and support to grant recipients.

It’s important to note that my information is based on the knowledge available up until September 2021, and there may have been updates or changes to SASSA’s policies and procedures since then. For the most accurate and up-to-date information, I recommend visiting the official SASSA website or contacting their offices directly.

SASSA is the South Africa Social Security Agency. Sassa’s role is to administer social grants to categories of people who are “vulnerable to poverty and in need of state support” in order to improve these people’s standard of living.

WHO CAN APPLY FOR A SASSA GRANT?

There is a misconception that only elderly people qualify for Sassa grants. There are in fact multiple categories of people who may apply for a grant. The Social Assistance Act of 2004 and regulations to the act provide the legal framework for the administration of seven social grants.

GRANTS OFFERED BY SASSA

• Grants for older persons

• Disability grants

• War veterans grants

• Care dependency grants

• Foster child grants

• Child support grants

• Grant-in-aid

• Social relief of distress

HOW DOES SASSA ASSESS WHETHER ONE QUALIFIES FOR A GRANT?

Sassa evaluates everyone who applies for a grant by conducting a means test, where they evaluate your income and assets. If you are below the threshold set by government, you qualify for the grant.

INCOME AND ASSETS THRESHOLDS SET FOR THE MEANS TEST

In terms of the current thresholds, a single person should not have assets totaling more than R1 056 000, and should not earn more than R73 800 per year or R6 150 per month.

A married person’s joint assets with his/her spouse should not total more than R2 112 000 and their joint income should not be more than R147 600 per year or R12 300 per month.

The value of the house that a person lives in is not taken into account, regardless of who it belongs to.

It makes no difference if the applicant is married in community of property or out of community of property.

The income of a spouse is taken into account whether you are married in or out of community of property.

If your spouse has deserted you for more than three months, your marital status is not taken into account. You need to notify Sassa of the desertion in an affidavit.

It is not possible for a third party to attend upon Sassa to make application for a grant on your behalf. Sassa require the individual to attend upon their offices personally.

In some instances, retirement homes and homes for people with disabilities may make arrangements for Sassa representatives to attend at their home to facilitate the application of a grant. For more information visit the website www.sassa.gov.za

Social Grants

Grants for older persons, also known as senior grants or aging grants, are financial assistance programs designed to support the needs and well-being of older adults. These grants can be provided by various government agencies, non-profit organizations, foundations, and private entities. The specific focus and eligibility criteria for these grants may vary depending on the organization offering them, but here are some common areas of support:

  1. Housing: Grants may be available to help seniors with home repairs, modifications for accessibility, and rental or mortgage assistance.
  2. Healthcare and medical expenses: Some grants can cover medical costs, prescription medications, assistive devices, and healthcare services not covered by insurance.
  3. Education and training: Certain grants support older individuals who wish to pursue further education, vocational training, or personal development courses.
  4. Nutrition and food assistance: Grants can provide funding for meals, nutrition programs, and food delivery services targeted at seniors who are experiencing food insecurity.
  5. Transportation: Grants may be available to assist with transportation costs, especially for seniors who face mobility challenges or live in rural areas with limited transportation options.
  6. Social services: Funding is often available for community-based programs that offer social support, counseling, and recreational activities for older adults.
  7. Volunteer and employment opportunities: Some grants focus on creating opportunities for seniors to engage in volunteer work or secure part-time employment.
  8. Legal assistance: Grants can provide funding for legal aid services, including help with estate planning, elder abuse cases, and consumer protection issues.

To find relevant grants, consider exploring local government websites, community organizations, senior centers, and websites that specialize in listing grant opportunities. Additionally, reach out to local non-profit organizations that work with older adults, as they may be aware of grants specific to your region. It’s important to carefully review the eligibility requirements and application process for each grant, as they may have specific age limits, income thresholds, and documentation requireme.
